In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
