Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge particular decisions from the official, echoing the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
